Terry has been painting since childhood and creating and selling arts and crafts since her teens in local street fairs and in occasional swap-meets.
Moving to Southeast Alaska in her early twenties she became enamored with the intense and wild beauty of the state. Cougar Productions was established in 1986 in Skagway Alaska as a sole proprietorship, painting signs and making porcupine and fossil ivory earrings for the large tourist trade there.
Moving to Tenakee Springs in 1988 where she has continued to paint and manufacture her crafts, fine arts, paintings, cards, prints, sign painting and even selling beer supplies to the local home brewers.

The artwork is inspired by the awesome surroundings that abound here in Tenakee Inlet, and in the many creatures that make this area their home such as the Humpback and Orca Whales, the Grizzly Bear, Sitka Black Tail Deer, Halibut, Salmon and many different crustaceans.

Many of the crafts have been manufactured from locally collected raw materials. Each piece is individually handcrafted.
Weathervane Scallop shell – Pecten caurinus – found on the Northern Pacific Coast. It is the larger of the scallop species in this area, with a mature scallop measuring more than 8” in diameter. They are a bivalve mollusk and prefer a sandy or gravel bed on the ocean floor, and move about by ‘swimming’ with a sort of jet propulsion – clapping the valves tightly together and forcing water out through openings on both sides of the hinge. This technique has developed an oversized, sweet-flavored muscle and is the only part of the scallop that is typically eaten. Shells from the Weathervane scallop were incorporated in the manufacturing of these purses along with the leather and polished hooves of a Sitka Black tail Deer. Sitka Black-Tailed Deer - Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis- ranging from northern British Columbia to Southeast Alaska, they are smaller and stockier than the Columbia black-tailed deer. Their antlers usually grow only three points per side. At least twelve separate vocalizations have been identified by biologists that the black-tailed deer use to communicate with each other. Leather from the Sitka black-tailed deer is used to make these medicine bags and smaller purses. Their antlers were used as button catches and for some of the larger beads. Other items that were converted for use are the dyed salmon fish skins and otter hides which adorn some of the front panels, along with turquoise, fossil ivory buttons and seed beads. Chum Salmon - Oncorhynchus keta- Like most other Pacific salmon species, chum salmon spend most of their life feeding in saltwater, then return to freshwater when mature to spawn once in the fall then die. At sea, juvenile chum salmon spend several months near shore then disperse into the open ocean. They grow rapidly in the ocean, reaching 12 or more pounds over the next 3–4 years, with the most rapid growth taking place during their final year at sea. As adults, they almost always return from feeding areas in the ocean to spawn in the very same stream and site where they were spawned. When chum salmon enter fresh water to spawn their appearance changes dramatically; their sides become very colored with dark blotches and they grow a set of what appear to be large “canine” teeth – hence the name “Dog Salmon”. The Chum Salmon jewelry is made from these teeth, which are collected, then dried, polished and set into sterling silver findings and made into earrings and necklaces. |
