Hi I am still seeking pictures and information on my uncle Warren Tufts. He was a land surveyor
He moved up there in the 60's. I understand he is deceased. And I am just trying to fill in my family tree
He was my moms brother. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I lived in Tenakee from the mid 1960's till the 70's....Clarks, Bainter were our names. We went to the one room school house on the hill. It was mostly us cousins, and I do remember the Taugs and the Zinns and Dermet... I found this page and wanted to leave a comment.

We moved to Tenakee in 1963 I was 5. My dad ran the crab cannery for Pacific Pearl , he also mantained the power plant, oil truck and fire truck. We lived above the Shamrock Theater, with running water and a flush toilet (one of the three in town). We lived the next ten years there. I miss all the old timers like Tenakee Pete, Mat and Fracis, Harry, Jim Bell, Dermit and Dori, The Taug Family, Speedy and Rosie. Rosie you made the best french fries and I'm sure you still do. My wife and I returned in 1982 for our hunnymoon. This summer we plan to visit again and have some more of those famos french fries. Thank you Tenakee for a great child hood.

Hi - Looking for Jim and Carmelita (I think their last name was Pope) from the mid-70's. They had a fishing boat and Carmelita was the cribbage champion of Tenakee Springs. I was in a base camp at Cedar Cove and they were my amazing fish suppliers and we provided them with batteries and fresh water. Does anyone know where they are?

Fished there for 3 summers in late 90's.
Some of the best times of my life.
Bless you McBeens who used to own Tenakee Hot Springs Lodge.
Every dollar spent there more than worth it.
Anyone hear from The McBeens lately?
I will never forget them and their experience and kindness.

As a teenager I work with my dad at a logging camp across the inlet from tenkee 1949/50 in the summer & my mother lived in one the little cabins like the post office close to the hot springs. I also fish off the tenkee cannary dock & caught some large halibt, that was food on the table for a few. I also fish several times in the river clostest to town, also caught some great fish.

I visited Tenakee Springs in March 2010 with my brother who has a cabin there. (Jim Donaghey). I loved it! I didn't know that there could be such a small but amazingly functional small community. I loved the idea of no cars, traffic, noise, well you get the picture. I will be back! I love the fun just getting there! Can you say......."Adventure?"

For years I wanted to visit Alaska and see my in-laws. This past June my dreams came true and we spent 8 days aboard the Sea Mist fishing and having a great time with family. One of our Port of calls was to Tenakee. I was amazed at the beauty of the place and one of my most favorite pictures was taken from your dock. I would like to share those pics with you and if someone could email me and let me know where to send them I would be glad to oblige.

Hi, there! I am from Detroit, Michigan, but came to Alaska as part of a girl's YMCA camp. Part of our trip was to sea kayak from Hoonah to Tenakee in eight days. When we arrived in Tenakee Springs, I instantly fell in love with the town. Let's just say that it's a far cry from the city life I am used to. Everyone I met was so incredibly kind and helpful, and the views were breathtaking. I wished that I could stay there forever! I love the strong sense of community I felt as soon as I stepped out of my kayak. Tenakee Springs is one of my favorite places I've ever visited, and I will be absolutely heartbroken if I don't get a chance to come back one day soon. Thank you!

Hi there Tenakee!! Long time no see-um. LOL I`m down here in Texas and just ran across this page. Even Scott Osborne posted on it. WOW. The Bessette kids were a bad little bunch in that town. Life happens and people change. Some day I will visit again. I long to be back home sometimes. But now my home is here with my wife and three children. I am going to school and served in the Navy for a stretch. I hope this finds all who knew of me and my family in good health and loving Alaska. WOW....it HAS been a long time. I first came to Tenakee as a fun girls getaway with my mother, Shawna Harper and some close friends for the annual Fireman's Ball when I was barely a teenager. I have never had so much fun! Who would have thought that this tiny town could throw such an awesome party. Let's just say I didn't call it an early night. :) I would say that at that time we all fell in love with Tenakee and it's people, and would certainly never be forgotten. The girls getaway continued each year and luckily Tenakee was our destination multiple times. Of all the gals on our getaway, my mother fell in love with Tenakee the most. I am now 24 years old and I have the priviledge of visiting Tenakee as often as I can since my mother, step-father Jim Harper, and little brother Tucker built a beautiful home and now live in Tenakee year round. It is truly a joy to visit Tenakee - the fact that I get to see my family is just a perk. :) Mom, Jim, & Tuck I miss you & love you bunches!! Can't wait to visit again!!

Wanted- House for Sale:
I am a school teacher and my husband is a commercial diver in Southeast. Although at this point, it is merely a possibility, but we are becoming interested in Tenekee Springs as a place to settle down with our two teenage daughters.
If you have a 3-4 bedroom house with a workshop/shed for sale, please email me the specifics and photos.

My best girlfriend and I shared time in Tenakee Springs in the summer of 1973; we are both now 53!!!! Since we just recently reunited after 32 years this past week, we have promised to vacation at Tenakee the summer of 2012. We presume there is now running water and actual plumbing? Seriously, during that time, there were "outhouses": in each of the cabins and the tide was the septic tank! We recall Rosie's Blue Moon Cafe, a theater where we watched "To Kill A Mockingbird" for 25 cents, and the mercantile, where eggs were about $3.00 a dozen!! The one big dock was actually an Alaskan Highway!! What a grand place!!!! We can't wait to visit!!!!

I know how much my Aunt Sandra Wardlow L-O-V-E-D loved Tenakee Springs and she took me for a 4 day visit to your beautiful little piece of heaven back in 1998. It didn't take me long to figure out why everyone who came to visit her in Juneau had to take the ferry ride to TKE and a float plane back home.
I'm sure you don't remember me, but she was one unforgettable person and she's now in her own little piece of Heaven as she passed away on Friday, January 21st after a battle with cancer. I wasn't sure if this news has made it your way yet, but I thought I would share my love for her and my love of TKE in the same message.
Rest in peace Aunt Sandra ~ God Bless you!

We spent alot of time in Tenakee in the mid seventies st Capella II ., making the trip.

HI!!! I spent the first 11 years of my life in Tenakee. My parents were Jim and Carol Lyon. They have both now passed but always regreted leaving Tenakee. I visited Tenakee for a week in 1995 with my Aunt Sandra (Wardlow). I so enjoyed the beauty of the island and the laid-back atmosphere, and the springs, oh the springs were wondrous! The crab that some friend of Sandra's caught fresh and brought us was so good that I actually wouldn't eat crab again for almost 20 years--there's no way it could ever be that good anywhere but Tenakee!! But my very favorite part of the island was a giant wolf-dog named Kona. He met me at the ferry dock and was my shadow, my constant companion, for the entire time I was there. He walked ahead of me, scouting on the trails, and laid quietly at the door when I was home. He was a tremendous dog and a beautiful old soul, and while I know he must be long gone by now, he lives on in my heart and in my photos. To me, Kona was the spirit of Tenakee: rough living meets giant hearts. Thanks for the memories!

I lived in Tenakee when I was 14. You all may remember my dad and step-mom. Greg Goodwin, and Heather Newbie. I'm now 30, and stumbled upon his website. I would like to visit one day and see what has changed (and stayed the same) over the past 16 years. I myself run my own private investigation and bounty hunter business. My dad passed away 5 years ago, and Heather is in Canada. Nathan and Greg Jr both live in Juneau, while I am currently in Colorado. I landed here after 9 years in the US Army, and while a pretty state, it has nothing on Alaska! Through viewing the links on this site, I noticed a lot of names I remember. I'm glad to see Tuck is still there (Greg worked on his boat for a while). If anyone would like to contact me, my email is scott.osborne@yahoo.com.

Hi all you residents of Tenakee and others,
I spent the sommer of 1995 in Kadashan, working for US forest service, and during my time in Kadashan we often went over to Tenakee. The people of Tenakee were fantastic and I had the most wonderful 4. of July there. I'd love to go back one day to meet the people again.

Don and Elsie Pegues were long time residents of Tenakee and caretakers of Snyders Merchantile for a long while.
Mayor Don Pegues runs the city now and in fine fashion,I might add. I worked for Don during his Pan Amercian World Airways days in Fairbanks in 1970. Don's career with Pan American had many wonderful chapters on a world wide scale.
I am proud to have worked with him and wish him all future success.

Tenakee Springs was not merely a stop over for us back in the summer of 2001 when my brother, a friend and I were on our trip.Tenakee was our destination! I was lucky enough to be able to spend 3 days and 4 nights there. We harbored there and spent every minute we could exploring the beauty of this peaceful place. Our morning walks for coffee and pastry; our midnight awakenings to the calling of the humpbacks; the bears we saw on our way to fishing near the Indian River bridge; sea lions in the harbor; the school house; the kind souls who have the patience to tolerate outsiders; and of course- the bubble net feeding frenzies we witnessed daily are all part of the mystic and magic of Tenakee. I will return someday soon and I pray that Tenakee will be as wonderful then as it was on my first trip.

I lived across the inlet at Corner Bay in the mid-late 70's and went to Tenekee regularly for one of Rosie's famous hamburgers at the Blue Moon Cafe. Dermott at the mercantile would load us us with goodies. He allowed me to go up in the attic to look at all the merchandise that was still in boxes from the early 1900's, what a fond memory. I certainly hope that the "Love Shacks" are still there. I have 4 pen and inks done of Them and other buildings on the main street. Thank you for the beautiful pictures and the memories.

Tenakee was one of my favorite "resting" places when I trolled in the area. I fished east Chatham Strait/ Freshwater Bay to Basket Bay in the mid-seventies. My trips around East Point were often rough but the trip was also worth while. I remember bar-b-cues on the beach at the harbor, and interesting produce at the mercantile, outhouses over the water were interesting and, of course, the hot springs pool etc. The town was always very quiet and congenial. If I thought I could find a lot and build a place after retirement, I would go there.
The only bad memory was in 1974 when my step-brother had his ill-fated event in False Bay. Old timers will remember the crash and loss of so many people important to Tenakee.
Anyway, Best wishes to all the folks in Tenakee.

My 16 year old son and I moved to Tenakee in 2004 for his Junior and Senior years of high school. We both agree it was best decision we ever made. The schooling was superior and supplemented with college level courses via the internet. The lifestyle was wonderful. It is easy to know where your kid is when they can only go left or right out the front door. With no cars that driving worry was non existent. I can honestly say that the wonderful community helped me as a single mom raise a responsible, outdoor loving, environmentally conscious young male. People in town stepped up to plate to teach him how to hunt, fish and process his catch. It is not easy to live in Tenakee, but promotes a work together for the good of all lifestyle. I am truly grateful for the experience. Lisa Jacobson

You've done a really good job pulling Tenakee together in one place. It will be an interesting and useful resource for those folks who ask "What's it like there?" The THC page looks great to me. The March Store Door is nearing completion and I'll put in a little note telling folks to check out this new site.
One thing, though,I wasn't able to get any photos to open except in the Picture Gallery. What am I doing wrong?
