The Tenakee Historical Collection puts out a quarterly newsletter called “The Store Door” The following is an excerpt from The Store Door, Volume 2, Issue 2, April 2004

From time to time, Tenakee’s various newspapers have featured poetry. These verses are from the February 27, 1947 edition of the HOME NEWS.

Between the mountain and the water,

Alaska has a pretty daughter,

Tenakee by the sea.

Springs of water hot and healing,

Through broken rocks come stealing.

Wooded hills and sandy beaches,

Backed by white capped mountain reaches,

Salmon sporting in the bay,

Herring endless as they spray;

Cod lie deep and halibut,

Clams lie buried in the muck.

Deer come down and eat the garden,

Without even asking Pardon.

Wily bear in the wood,

Leave them there,

It’s for your good.

Happy porpoise, happy whales,

Sport about and flip their tails.

Such is Tenakee.

On this inlet of the sea.

If you have no debts to pay,

If no sweetheart turns you grey,

(And you can’t reach Mandalay),

Come to Tenakee to stay.

Love the mountains? Love the Sea?

Better come to Tenakee.
